The Daytona & St. John Florida area features several of the state’s top prospects at a variety of positions across the board. With the season underway, Six Star Football is taking an inside look at the prospects college programs are looking at this season.
Here, Six Star Football takes a look at several of the top corner back prospects to know in the 2021 class in the Daytona & St. John areas.
Ja’Corey Benjamin, 5’10, 162, DB, 2021, Flagler PC @jb_benjamin4
An athletic and agile corner who can stay with receivers and shows good bounce and the ability to get up and make plays through the air. He has good size at 5’10, 162-pounds and he runs hard and shows good effort sealing off receivers on the left side of the field. He’s a natural prospect at his position, has strong athleticism and can really make a statement as a tackler. He hits hard and can stay stride-for-stride with skill players outside the numbers and then quickly move towards the ball carrier when the QB hands it off. He currently holds an offer from Keiser University.
Jorden Bernard, 5’10, 150, CB/WR, 2021, New Smyrna Beach @jorden_bernard
An all-area DB who is flying under the radar. Bernard is great at making plays on the ball and can tip away passes and even come away with the interception. He has good size at 5’10, 150-pounds and shows the kind of quickness that can’t be taught. He can see time on both sides of the ball and has great hands and good length, showing the ability to go up and make one-handed catches in contact situations. A skilled athlete who has a promising frame and speed and skillset. He reports a 4.7 40-yard dash and has a 215 bench and a 320 squat.
Amir Brown, 5’11, 188, DB, 2021, Seabreeze @mirfetti
Also a solid rushing option who can tuck the ball and fight his way through contact and score. He has good speed and good instincts with the ball in his hands. He can create on his own and is good at staying behind his blockers and then bursting out at the last second. Brown has good athleticism needed for a DB as well, showing good toughness and vision and the ability to make strong tackles on ball carriers and shows good pressure, making it difficult for the receiver to come down with the ball or create much after the catch.
Jaylen Collins, 6’0, 170, DB, 2021, Flagler PC @JaylenCollins_1
A two-way prospect who also shows out as a track and field athlete. Collins has solid size at 6’0, 170-pounds and has a 6’3 wingspan which comes in handy on both sides of the ball. He is good at playing physical and using his frame and shows some high point skills and the ability to play through the air. Collins has good timing to his plays and he can get to the ball and even creates with the ball in his hands. A player with great hips, good speed and a lot of patience. Before he committed to Air Force he held offers from Keiser, St Thomas, Stetson, Army and Notre Dame College to name a few and he recently picked up his ninth offer from Butler. He is also a standout student who reports a 4.3 GPA and he reports a 4.5 40.
Evan Eilers, 5’9, 160, CB/FS, 2021, Bartram Trail @evaneilerss
A quick player who can cover receivers and burst off the edge and get to the quarterback. He looks to play physical and he can’t help but show off his quickness and impressive decision making on the move. Eilers plays big and makes good tackles and has a way of pulling down opponents from behind and even making tackles for loss in big moments. A mobile defender who has a lot of programs expressing interest in his potential. He currently holds offers from Alvenia, LaGrange, Methodist University and Huntingdon College.
Trae Graham-Wright, 6’5, 155, CB/WR, 2021, Pine Ridge @traesowavvy
Also an athlete who shows up on the hardwood, Graham-Wright is an interesting player who has strong size, good hands and an improving skill set. He’s listed at 6’5, 155-pounds which makes him a difficult matchup to cover and one who can extend and come down with the ball. He can cover ground and make strong defensive plays when a receiver goes up to get the ball and can also tackle well and wrap up ball carriers on the spot. A long and rangy prospect who has good strides.
Tyrese Green, 5’10, 175, DB, 2021, Atlantic @Jackboy_green
An aggressive and hard-working athlete who can show up as both a DB and a FS. He has terrific footwork and he often appears to hold a receiver in place on the line, keeping him in front and out of position. He is always calm and collected and he knows how to capitalize on his opponents mistakes. Last season he recorded 34 solos, including 16 for loss and had two interceptions as well. An all-area performer who has a 28.6 vertical, a 275 bench and a 370 squat. Green recently de-committed to Georgia Southern University. He had chose the program over several programs which included Eastern Kentucky University, Marshall, Long Island and University of New Hampshire to name a few. He also reports a 3.5 GPA.
Cedric Hawkins, 5’10, 165, DB, 2021, Trinity @CedricHawkins21
A two-way prospect who has great hands and solid footwork. A 5’10, 165-pound DB who is currently flying under the radar as an athlete. He is an elusive player with the ball in his hands and can avoid contact but is good at collapsing on the ball and taking away openings as a defender. He has a strong grip and can grab a hold of an opponents and hold them back as he adjusts himself and prepares to take them to the ground. He’s physical and aggressive and is difficult to get around when he’s locked in and looking to make plays. Hawkins is also a standout in the classroom and reports a 3.8 GPA.
Lemondre Joe, 6’0, 170, DB, 2021, Mainland @20LemondreJoe
A tone and nimble player at 6’0, 170-pounds who has good footwork and speed in one-on-one situations down the field. He can stop and change directions on a dime and is great at coming away with the ball. He shows strong hip movement and can adjust his game and put himself in a position to make a play. He can break up plays through the air, force receivers out of position and get to the ball carrier and make strong and powerful hits and tackles. Joe has shown some slick moves on the hardwood and has put in the time this offseason working on his footwork and explosiveness. He currently holds an offer from Bethel University, Tennessee Martin, Johnson C. Smith and he has heard from a variety of other programs.
Cole Leasure, 5’11, 165, DB, 2021, University @colefb_02
A physical and athletic prospect who has solid leadership and a great work ethic. He hits hard and can cover ground quickly and make good tackles on the move. He’s listed at 5’11, 165-pounds and shows good muscle tone and strength for a player his size while showing solid speed and athleticism. He can stay with receivers in one-on-one situations and is also good at operating as a safety, looking to cover whatever he needs to and stop drives both on the ground and in the air. Also a standout student who reports a 4.14 GPA.
Jeremy Mitchell, 5’9, 165, DB, 2021, New Smyrna Beach @6ixxsideJ
An explosive and energetic player who has great speed and the ability to make incredibly hard passes. He is a strong player for his size and he plays as if he were a few inches taller than his listed height at 5’9, 165-pounds. A prospect who shows a good upside and can be counted on to get to the ball and make strong tackles in the open field. He can help his teammates make plays but that isn’t what he finds himself doing that often. He stays with receivers and makes plays on his own and in one-on-one situations.
Joseph Skinner, 6’0, 173, DB, 2021, Ponte Vedra @josephskinnerDB
Skinner is a smart and confident DB who has good energy and long strides. He is comfortable up close with receivers and he is good at anticipating plays and has good hands and can even come away with an interception. He’s listed at 6’0, 173-pounds and he has a way of getting to the ball and the ball carrier and making it difficult for the receiver to have an opening or even a moment to breathe on his own. Skinner has a great understanding of his position and the game itself and shows a good upside and a solid skill set moving forward. He also reports a 3.0 GPA.
Dequan Stanley, 5’10, 165, DB/WR, 2021, St. Augustine @DequanStanley2
The University of South Florida commit brings loads of speed and a natural rhythm to the field which shows up on both sides of the ball. He has the kind of speed that defenders struggle to stay in front of, a player who often has to slow down and change up his timing in order to greet the ball down field. He can make opponents miss and can stay low and on his feet when opponents look to wrap up his feet and take him off his path. Stanley isn’t fooled with routes and can make important tackles and has a way of diving out and sealing off opponents that is all his own. An important dual-athlete for his team who has a lot of potential at the next level.
Jordan Wilhite, 5’9, 169, CB, 2021, Nease @Jordan_wilhite2
A strong DB who has good muscle and lower body strength. He plays big and physical and is good at picking his moments to show his strength and overall toughness. A 5’9, 169-pound player who has good muscle tone and good vision for his position. He is good at making plays on his own down the field and is comfortable matching up against the opposing team’s first option at receiver, although he is seen covering a lot of receivers and skill players over the course of the game. He helps his teammates finish plays if the ball carrier is refusing to go down and looks to wrap them up and use his weight to his advantage.
Myzel Williams, 6’1, 190, DB, 2021, DeLand @WilliamsMyzel
The Mississippi State University commit brings a high level of play to the field. He explodes on film and has the ability to impact a game at an elite level as a defender. He’s strong and quick and shows a fluid nature and the ability to make jarring hits on rushers as well as athletic plays through the air. He has the kind of toughness and work ethic that never goes overlooked. He’s incredibly enthusiastic when he’s on the field and is just as hyped when a teammate makes his tackle as well. An impressive leader and athlete who does his part and is constantly performing.
